The second Atlanta International Pop Festival was a music festival held in a soybean field adjacent to the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia. Originally scheduled for July 3 to July 5, 1970, it did not finish until near dawn on the 6th.
It was the only successor to the first Atlanta International Pop Festival 1969. The event was promoted by Alex Cooley, who had organised the same event the previous year, as well as the Texas International Pop Festival. Like the Woodstock festival the previous summer, the event was promoted as three days of peace, love and music. Also like Woodstock, it became an "open event" when the promoter threw open the gates after crowds outside began to tear down the plywood fence that had been erected around the site. An estimated 350,000 to 500,000, and possibly 600,000 people attended.
Performers included The Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull (scheduled but did not perform, citing laryngitis), Terry Reid, B. King, Procol Harum, Jimi Hendrix, Chambers Brothers, Poco, Grand Funk Railroad, Ravi Shankar, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, John Sebastian, Mountain, and Spirit. Jimi Hendrix played to the largest American audience of his career, presenting his rendition of the Stargled Banner for the fireworks around midnight on the Fourth of July. Among the most known artists appearing on this day were: The Allman Brothers Band, Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, Johnny Winter, Bob Seger System, Spirit, Mott The Hoople and Richie Havens. As as avid 60's & 70's concert ticket connoisseur, I can tell you that finding pre-1972 stubs from a concert that included the Allman Brothers with Duane Allman is almost impossible, not to mention this one is from one of the best known early rock festivals in history. AUTHENTIC GLOBE TICKETS The authentic GLOBE COMPANY card stock has their famous watermark built right into the card stock which alone authenticates the ticket (and made them largely impossible to reproduce).Especially now, as the machines that were around back then to produce the card stock are long gone. This ticket was part of a large lot found in storage in the last decade or so. Most of the thousands of tickets were never used since the gates were torn down and the show effectively became free right from the 1st day!
They just weren't thrown away and over the last 40+ years, many of the tickets have been found and here is one of them. Here is an excerpt from a prominent Beatles website (rarebeatles. Com) that touches on the ticket printing process. Tickets, unlike massed produced commercial products, were only available regionally and in most cases are somewhat difficult to find. The printing of the tickets themselves was a fairly complex process that sometimes required many passes through various printing presses. Ticket manufacturers like Globe used to require at least 2 weeks to complete a print job. Tickets were usually printed in sheets of twelve, with the perforations already in place for each ticket. Usually the text information on the ticket would be printed first i. Performer name, venue, price, etc.
If the text contained more than one color, the tickets would be run through a separate time for each color. Often, the tickets would again be run separately through a "Hiedelburg"-type press for the seat numbers, row numbers and section numbers to be printed. These types of tickets can be noted for the imprint that the seat numbers leave in the ticket. If the promoter were presenting more than one show, another batch of tickets would be printed in the same way but with a different date and/or time, and some form of distinct marking to assist in recognizing it as a ticket for the other performance.
